This stone actually comes from the petrified, agatized skeletal remains of dinosaurs.
The borders of the “cells” you see are the trebeculae, which are the natural voids in the bones. Like birds today, dinosaur bones were partially hollow so that they were lighter relative to their massive size while still retaining their strength. Over the course of millions of years, minerals (mostly silica) slowly filled these voids and hardened into colorful chalcedony (agate).
Quality Gembone continues to become harder to find, and more expensive. The best is often polished as specimens.

Our stones are cut for closed back settings, so most will have unpolished backs.
